100 Lewes Women #55 – Elizabeth Howard

Elizabeth Howard was a campaigner who worked tirelessly to improve life in Lewes. As well as her career in social work, Elizabeth served as a town and district councillor and undertook a great deal of voluntary activity. It was through her efforts, and those of others like her, that the town benefits from well-loved places such as the All Saints Community Arts & Youth Centre, the Star Brewery arts complex, the Needlemakers shops, the Railway Land Nature Reserve, as well as the Lewes to Kingston cycle track.

Elizabeth died in 2006, having made a lasting contribution to the town. Lewes News has kindly allowed us to reproduce this piece by K Boxall from November 1994 which describes her life. Elizabeth is also commemorated on a plaque outside Southover Grange, where fittingly, the Friends of Lewes have installed a cycle rack in her memory.
